SizeCheck® uses the high precision single point LRS-50 laser from Hermary Opto Electronics. We were the first company to install these scanners in a sawmill, and now have over 400 of them in operation. Here are typical scan zones for a single line mill:

The lasers are arranged in pairs to measure the thickness or width of a cant or board. A small mill might have as few as 3 zones, but the largest SizeCheck® system has 13 zones.

LRS-50 laser scanner from Hermary Opto Electronics Inc.

These lasers are ideal for this application. They use triangulation to compute the range to a target, and at close range (5 to 10 inches) they can measure to the nearest thousandth of an inch (much more accurate than typical sawmill optimizer lasers.) They can also take up to 1000 measurements per second, and can be located up to 1000' away from the central electrical cabinet.
